Hydroxyapatite toothpaste - an effective alternative to fluoride

After searching rigorously for a safer alternative to fluoride, we discovered a material that is chemically and structurally similar to enamel, nano-hydroxyapatite. At the right concentration, this biomimetic material is just as effective as fluoride in preventing tooth decay.

Although fluoride toothpaste was the first product to aid in remineralization...

It is in fact not perfect. Brushing with a fluoride toothpaste forms an acid-resistant fluorapatite layer on the surface of the enamel. In doing so it prevents calcium and phosphate ions from diffusing into the underlying layers where initial caries lesions start. Nano-hydroxyapatite is effective at reaching these layers. This leads us to believe that nano-hydroxyapatite will be the next remineralizing agent to revolutionize oral health.

Remineralization Booster

n-HA remineralizes initial caries lesions below the surface. This makes n-HA highly effective at repairing the enamel and preventing cavities from forming.

Calcium Reservoir

During an acid attack, n-HA that is stored in the biofilm dissolves and releases calcium ions. Higher calcium concentrations enables a shift in the chemical equilibrium and raises the pH. This prevents demineralization- the dissolution of tooth minerals.

Prevents Plaque Build Up

n-HA becomes incorporated into the microbial biofilm. In doing so, plaque forming bacteria adhere to free n-HA particles instead of the tooth.

Protective Barrier

n-HA in toothpaste adheres to n-HA in the tooth tissue. In doing so it creates a new protective layer that protects the underlying tooth from acid attacks.

Nano-hydroxyapatite
A mineral that is naturally found in teeth and bones. It has been proven to remineralize the enamel and occlude dentinal tubules, making it effective at repairing your teeth and relieving sensitivity.
Zinc citrate
Zinc is an essential trace element within the body. It also helps to improve oral health by neutralizing breath odors, and by restricting and preventing  plaque and tartar formation.
Xylitol
Xylitol helps prevent caries by reducing the adhesion of cariogenic bacteria to the tooth surface. It also promotes remineralization by increasing the salivary flow and reduces gum inflammation.
Cellulose
Scrubbing agent. Two particle sizes address cleansing and polishing of teeth respectively.
Calcium Carbonate
A mineral that is derived from limestone. Gently polishes enamel, removing plaque and stains.
Glycerine
A naturally occurring alcohol. It moisturizes and prevents tartar formation by delaying calcification of plaque.
Sorbitol
Sorbitol is naturally derived from corn. Not only does it moisten the toothpaste and mouth, but it also acts as a non-cariogenic sweetener and creates a cooling effect.
Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate
Derived from coconuts, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, acts as a mild foaming agent. It spreads the toothpaste around the oral cavity and cleanses by penetrating and dissolving plaque.
Aloe Vera

A multifunctional plant extract due to a number of active compounds, vitamins and essential amino acids. It has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

Clove Essential Oil
Has analgesic and anti-bacterial effect. Assists in modulating the dental biofilm by inhibiting proliferation of cariogenic bacteria.
Green Tea Extract

Contains a high concentrations of EGCG, which act as a powerful anti oxidant and prevents biofilms from forming. It has also been shown to assist in modifying and improving dentine structure.

Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste? YES! It is loaded with calcium and phosphate. It can prevent and heal cavities. It’s non-toxic and biocompatible. It may help teeth appear whiter and improve gum health. It’s good for the oral microbiome, is resistant to acidic pH, and is kid-friendly!

Dr Kyle Blair, DDSCovington Family Dental

Benefits of Hydroxyapatite over Fluoride Toothpaste:
1) Oral microbiome friendly
2) Fortifies enamel
3) Bimimetic and non-toxic
4) Reduces risk of fluorosis
5) Kid friendly (safe enough to swallow)
6) Whitens

There may be an alternative, hydroxyapatite, that both patients and dental professionals will soon be able to agree upon… so far this is what I have been recommending to my non fluoride patients.

Whitney DiFoggio, BS, RDHDental hygienist

There is a very healthy alternative, a toothpaste made from hydroxyapatite - a calcium mineral naturally found in human bones and teeth that works just as well as fluoride-based toothpaste in preventing cavities AND it also helps to restore damaged tooth surfaces. - a game-changer if you want to avoid the risks of fluoride.
