EvaGlo’s Story
EvaGlo was born out of a personal journey. Our co-founder, Tracy, raised her children fluoride-free due to concerns about its potential toxicity. Guided by Tracy’s nutrition background, the family ate a well-balanced diet without refined sugars, ultra-processed carbohydrates, sweetened beverages, or fruit juices. Additionally, they followed a standard oral care routine of brushing with a natural toothpaste and flossing daily.
Despite these precautions, Tracy’s five-year-old son developed cavities requiring the extraction of two teeth—a devastating shock. The natural toothpaste that they were using was not protecting their teeth. Tracy consulted dentists to find out why the cavities formed, given her family’s healthy diet and diligent oral care routine. One possible explanation raised was genetic susceptibility, with fluoride suggested as a preventive measure in such cases. Over the same period, Tracy noticed a broader pattern. Many customers of Real Food Co., the organic grocery store she owns in Somerset West, who used natural toothpaste, experienced similar dental issues. This prompted Tracy to explore fluoride alternatives that could support oral health while aligning with the preferences of the natural health community.
Armed with an Honors degree in Biochemistry, a Master’s degree (Cum Laude) in Nutrition and lots of worried-mommy passion, Tracy started vigorous research on the remineralisation process of teeth and how to support it. At the same time, Sarah (co-founder), who has a Master’s degree (Cum Laude) in Animal Nutrition, was enthusiastic about research and joined the investigation. Together, they poured over numerous peer-reviewed research papers on alternatives to fluoride and discovered that there was research supporting the remineralising properties of nano-hydroxyapatite.
Inspired by this discovery, Tracy wanted to utilise a nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste as a safer option for her family and to share it with other concerned families. However, at this time there were no nano-hydroxyapatite toothpastes available in South Africa. This led to a bold idea: develop a locally made nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste. After months of meticulous research, careful planning, exploring natural alternatives to common toothpaste ingredients, and testing various formulations, EvaGlo was born.
